A March 16th report in The Columbus Dispatch is entitled: “Rob Portman commentary: Gay couples also deserve chance to get married.” Essentially this article considers the Senator’s switch from a defense of heterosexual marriage to now supporting the ‘right’ for gay couples to enjoy all the benefits of a ‘traditional marriage.’
The news story, online, is found at: http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/editorials/2013/03/15/gay-couples-also-deserve-chance-to-get-married.html
In the article is the following is from Senator Portman:
“At the time, my position on marriage for same-sex couples was rooted in my faith tradition that marriage is a sacred bond between a man and a woman. Knowing that my son is gay prompted me to consider the issue from another perspective: that of a dad who wants all three of his kids to lead happy, meaningful lives with the people they love, a blessing Jane and I have shared for 26 years.
“I wrestled with how to reconcile my Christian faith with my desire for Will to have the same opportunities to pursue happiness and fulfillment as his brother and sister. Ultimately, it came down to the Bible’s overarching themes of love and compassion and my belief that we are all children of God.”
But let us recognize that a father may have such feelings … Yet God and faith are not mere feeling-based realities … Do you really think God “winks at sin and says … Well OK this time?” Portman, in his flesh dilemma (which is the same for all of us) has rationalized away his faith (something all do not do, we have choice). He has assumed the Scriptures do not hold application uniformly. This conclusion is from the gut, not fact, nor Scripture, and not based on the whole of what God provides. All pertinent information applies, not just what we decide to cull from the body of the biblical text.
Let us consider one of the scripture-based responses to the internet posted article … after the article you will find comments. One comment offered by a Diana starts with:
(DIANA _____ (DINY)
“Yes, we are to love and have compassion on all people, including gays, without accepting the lifestyle they choose to live. The Bible is clear in Romans 1:24, … ” and the verses Diana’s comment includes span Romans 1:24 to 28 and then she ends with “John 8:11 said, …Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more. go and sin no more. It is heartbreaking when people change their minds whenever their family or friends are involved. I have family in this situation. I love them but do not accept what they are doing.”
We include the full section of the scripture from Romans below … In fact we extend that to verse 32 simply because Senator Portman really needs to reconsider what it means to say … that is, if he fears God and is a believer (Jewish or Christian). After all, from Abraham, through Israel, and the delivery of God’s teachings (law), through the Jewish contingent of human kind, we are presented a choice that leads to life or death … as scripture says … choose!
In fact the recent poll on those who favor support for gay marriage, including the Clintons, the President and Vice President and other political figures, et al., ALL fall into the same rationalization. Diana is correct that ” we are to love” and that is the appeal for Portman’s reversal, but Diana goes on to the earthy issue of what God’s WILL is … and thus what Portman’s son, Will, is doing … and the consequence to the father Portman for supporting what his child is doing … read all of the citation below to verse 32 … is as if he were engaged in the very same sin. And we also, should equally take note for sin is a human-wide dilemma. The choice to abide in God’s will is the choice … Portman stands with God, or alone.
But first let us also make an added observation about the current state of faith in the sight of these rationalizations. Recent polls say over fifty percent of Americans support gay marriage. This poll is not only a reflection of support, but also of a lapse in understanding of God’s will and a departure from what it means to say “we believe in God.” The poll is really saying more than half are not real believers. They know not God.
Bluntly put, if gay marriage is also condoning sin, then politicians are condoning a wrong behavior, even in the privacy of a gay household, have we supported rights that also legalize sodomy? Not a kind notion, but a sober question. God would have you face reality on this issue … so has the President supported a change in the moral foundation of our nation? If as when Israel turned her back on God, God removed His blessing … we are left to wonder what this North American nation will experience when He turns His back here!
As with all of the posts here, we are looking out the window to think, absorbing thoughts, considering as much as we can as objectively as possible. If there is a God, we need a sober moment in deep thought. We are left to choose … Our life is in the balance. Ultimately, it’s not just about the gay life style, but instead it’s about our disposition as we walk into eternity. Life now is the only opportunity to consider all factors … and decide.
The Scriptures tell us that near the end of days that even some of the elect may be deceived. Certainly, elected officials today maneuver their opinions based on a personal focus … playing politics of self and not by God … if they believed beyond personal rationalization … they might reveal something lacking here today … specifically … moral leadership. God would agree, but what about you?
From the book of Romans:
“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things. Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them. (Romans 1:18-32 NKJV)
